Untapped Batik
Untapped batik is a term newly developed by the founder of Mahestri specifically to describe the Batik that have not been widely recognized. Untapped batik stands as an important part of the Batik diversity of Indonesia. According to the online dictionary of Indonesia (Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia), Batik is a cloth drawn with patterns using a specific method of writing processed in a particular way to create its uniqueness.
Batik Indonesia have been declared as a “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by the UNESCO since 2 October 2009. Batik is a cultural craft relishing priceless aesthetic values and become an esteemed part of the culture of Indonesia (especially Java) for ages.
In the past, Javanese women made their Batik as a source of income. Thus making Batik was perceived specifically an exclusive job for women only. Men got into the field of work just after stamp batik was formed. Throughout the course of civilization, Batik have an immense transformation, spread from Java to the entire archipelago of Indonesia. The process of Batik are involving its local norms and values, and now on we could find a broader variety of Batik, start from Batik Aceh, to even the far east beauty of Batik Papua.
