Batik Gumelem

The story of Batik Gumelem have begun with the establishment of special region, named Gumelem, under Surakarta Kingdom, around year 1830. This special region had special privileges, such as been categorized as an entity without an obligation to paying taxes.

Another version, Batik Gumelem has been considered to be related to Batik Banyumasan. Along with the development of Batik Banyumasan, one of the troops of Prince Diponegoro had also developed batik in Gumelem.

Located in Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java, Gumelem is about 40 KM southwest of the capital of Banjarnegara Regency. There are dozens of craftswomen. They are home industries and members of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) community. Currently the number of Batik Gumelem craftswomen reaches more than 55 people, spread on Gumelem Wetan, Gumelem Kulon and Panerusan Wetan.

Batik Gumelem has its characteristics which is stick to the classic, a timeless standard, and prefer to have a sogan (brown) color. Until now, Batik Gumelem Batik still produce the classic patterns of batik, such as Sido Mukti and Sidoluhur, which are typical of the Surakarta Palace.
